ISO 17100 certified legal translation agency. We produce qualified legal translation between 30 languages, legal translations with quality assured.
Legal translation comprises legal texts from all the main areas of law, such as constitutional law, administrative law, civil law, commercial law, tax law, criminal law. Legal translation has strict requirements for both language and style. The translator must render both the right style and precision in the wording and text structure and to ensure a quality translation they must also possess specific legal knowledge as well as proficiency in legal language.
Many of our legal translators are themselves lawyers or legal practitioners
The Native Translator offers all types of legal translation requiring linguistic and terminological expertise. All of our legal translators are carefully chosen and tested to ensure that even very complex legal information is rendered correctly. A translator who has not had any legal training can often produce a linguistically persuasive text, yet it will often be materially incorrect, inaccurate and misleading. It is therefore important for a good result that the translator has in-depth knowledge of the legal system of the country in which the target language is spoken and has a good command of the legal terminology. All our translators are therefore certified translators or legal practitioners who also possess a language degree or considerable translation experience specialising in law.
The Native Translator meets strict legal requirements
For legal and official purposes, a number of countries require the translator to swear that the translation is the legal equivalent of the source text, either by signing and stamping the document or, as in Italy, by confirming this before a judge. This can involve substantiating material and other official documents. In most cases, only translators who have been certified are permitted to carry out such translations.
Vastly different rules between countries regarding legal authenticity
A translator who specialises in legal translation or is a lawyer in their country does not necessarily have to be a certified translator. Instead, they must take a specific examination. The rules for translating into legally equivalent texts differ greatly from country to country. Translators wishing to become certified must pass rigorous tests to prove that they have the necessary language skills. Note that not only are the language skills tested, but also that the translator has in-depth subject knowledge within law and finance. You can find out more under Certified translation.

The mother-tongue principle is a quality requirement
The mother-tongue principle is one of the cornerstones and a quality requirement when it comes to legal translation. The principle states that a translator must only translate into their native language. A native English speaker translates into English, a native Spanish speaker translates into Spanish, and so on. To be considered a native speaker, the translator must have grown up in and completed their education in a country where the language is the official language.
Quality-assured translation in accordance with ISO 17100
We have held quality certification since 2011, and from 2015 in accordance with the new ISO standard, ISO 17100. Being ISO certified means that we have invested money and effort into documenting and verifying all our processes, from the requirements placed on translators and their recruitment to ensuring the quality of every translation that we produce. For example, we only use professional, full-time graduate translators who specialise in law. All translations are proofread by a second translator with the same qualifications as the first translator. Compliance with the established criteria for the certification is regularly inspected by the body that certified us. As a certified legal translation agency, we also provide quality assurance with the translations we produce.
Confidentiality
We treat all information that we receive concerning a job in strict confidence. All our personnel - project managers, translators and office staff - are bound by a strict confidentiality undertaking.
